NAME: Goblin Slayer
CANON: Goblin Slayer
CANON POINT: After Volume 2, just before the harvest festival.
AGE: 20
BACKGROUND: here
PERSONALITY:
Blunt: Goblin Slayer is not a character who emotes very often, and is depicted as having a voice that rarely fluctuates. While he was more emotional as a young child, the trauma of what happened to his family and village before his eyes combined with the training he went through to hone his goblin-slaying abilities have sealed those emotions deep below his surface. His manner of speaking and choice of words reflect this in the way that he does not often use more words than necessary to convey a point, and is often jabbed at for constantly saying “Is that right?” in response to questions or new information as opposed to offering further insight on the topic at hand.
Obsessed: While it’s true that everyone in his canon is referred to by their role or job title, few take their mantle as seriously as Goblin Slayer. After his home and family were ruined by goblins he became obsessed with their destruction, suffering through intense training to learn how they think and behave so as to better kill them. In all situations, his mind is at least somewhat occupied with the thought of goblins. Having a meal at the tavern? Still in full armor, ready to fight goblins. Free time? He’ll use it to prep his equipment for killing goblins. Looking for jobs on the task board? Only going to take ones that involve killing goblins. It is only on matters of goblins and goblin slaying that he will become more verbose, and is one of the few topics on which he seems to have a very clear opinion: “The only good goblins are the ones that never come out of their stinking holes”.
Awkward: None of the training Goblin Slayer went through entailed how to be social amongst people, and it shows. Not only is he bad at making small talk (as mentioned before, he doesn’t often offer much in the way of conversation) but he has trouble reading some very basic social cues as well. There was an instance where he even didn’t bother saying hello to his companions when they greeted him at the adventuring guild, because since they saw that he saw them there was “no point” in saying so aloud; in another instance he started to leave the room the very second that Guild Girl mentioned there was no goblin hunting to be done that day, in spite of it being plainly obvious that there was something she wanted to speak to him about. He also has a tendency to take things very, very literally, such as when High Elf Archer demanded that he not use fire and he later claimed that the explosion he ended up using was not technically just fire.
Kind: In spite of his social shortcomings and somewhat imposing demeanor, at his core Goblin Slayer does have a good heart. While he will put adventurers out of their misery when they are beyond saving he certainly takes no joy in it, and expresses gladness in the few instances where they can save someone before it is too late. He even goes so far as to state that he would prefer if his job was unnecessary and he had no work to do, because that would mean that there were no goblins left causing others to suffer as he had. He also acknowledges when others do good deeds for him, and does not hesitate to return the favor, such as when Guild Girl asks him to sit in on an evaluation meeting for Rhea Scout; the task involved no goblin-killing, but given that Guild Girl had always done right by him he took on the task for her benefit. He also agrees to go to the Harvest Festival with both Farm Girl and Guild Girl since both of them have shown him kindness in the past. One might suspect that a man going out with two girls in one day might have ulterior motives, but seeing as how he plainly states that it isn’t a date right in front of Farm Girl and blatantly disregards Guild Girl’s remarks about whether or not he enjoys seeing her in a skirt it’s pretty safe to say his intentions were pure. Perhaps the most telling sign of him caring for others, however, is shown after his party barely escapes alive from their battle with a goblin horde being led by a Goblin Champion; in his introspection the next day he considers that he had constantly thrown himself into danger and risked his own life, but this was the first time his actions and decisions had nearly led to the death of others who he cared about, and he laments that the training he received in goblin-slaying offered him no insight as to what he should do about this feeling. As soulless as he is to goblins, he clearly has a sense of compassion towards others.
Scarred: At a very young age Goblin Slayer was exposed to horrible sights involving his own family, and the effects on him are clearly lingering. He is capable of stating when someone looks good (as he did regarding Farm Girl in her dress for the Harvest Festival), but doesn’t seem to acknowledge any sort of sexual thoughts even in situations where one might be expected to. Given the severely graphic and violating nature of what he saw happen, not just at his home but time and time again when he enters goblin nests, it seems as if Goblin Slayer has trouble viewing sex as something beyond a traumatic experience, even if he is aware that for others it is a normal thing. Since almost his every waking thought pertains to goblins - and the wickedness that goblins do - it is not surprising.
